©AfreePress-(Lomé, Aug. 12, 2023)-A member country of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) is opposing a military intervention by the organization in Niger. This announcement was made on Friday, August 11, 2023, by President José Maria Neves.
“We should all work towards restoring constitutional order in Niger, but under no circumstances through a military intervention or armed conflict at this moment,” stated the President of Cape Verde, José Maria Neves.
Similar to the Head of State of Togo, the Cape Verdean President opts for negotiation and dialogue. “We must engage in intense negotiations and resolve these issues through diplomatic means, as any military intervention at this time would worsen the situation and turn the region into an explosive zone,” he emphasized.
During a summit in Nigeria, where Cape Verde was represented by its ambassador, ECOWAS gave the green light for the activation of its standby force “within a short period of time.”
