MOSCOW, Russia – The President of the Republic of Togo’s Council, His Excellency Faure Essozimna Gnassingbé, was received at the Kremlin on November 18 for a high-level official visit, following an invitation from the President of the Russian Federation, Vladimir Putin.
This diplomatic meeting, long in preparation, is part of intensive multilateral consultations conducted by Lomé with its strategic partners. The stated objective is to consolidate international alliances around African priorities, including peace, security, and development.
The planned one-on-one meeting between the two leaders was the centerpiece of the visit. Discussions focused primarily on strengthening bilateral cooperation in several key sectors: diplomacy, economy, trade, agriculture, energy, vocational training, and food security.
Beyond bilateral matters, Presidents Gnassingbé and Putin also addressed major international issues, focusing on regional stability, the fight against climate change, and the implementation of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
This meeting confirms Russia’s stated desire to strengthen its diplomatic and economic foothold in West Africa, and Togo’s aim to diversify its strategic partnerships.
