©AfreePress-(Lomé, january 08, 2023)-Faure Gnassingbé, the Togolese President and designated mediator for the ECOWAS in the Nigerien crisis, played a pivotal role in securing the temporary release of Mohamed Bazoum Salem, son of former President Mohamed Bazoum. Accused of plotting against the state, Salem Mohamed Bazoum was released on January 8, 2024, with the condition to appear before the court when required.
The Chief Clerk of the Nigerien Military Tribunal, Squadron Leader Moumouni Abdoulaye, confirmed this temporary release. It was facilitated through the intervention of Presidents Faure Gnassingbé and Julius Maada Bio, the ECOWAS mediators for the Niger crisis.
Togolese Minister of Foreign Affairs, Prof Robert Dussey, commended the actions of Presidents Gnassingbé and Maada Bio. He emphasized that this release, decided by Brigadier General Abdourahamane TIANI, President of the National Council for the Safeguard of the Nation (CNSP) and Head of State of Niger, was a humanitarian measure.
In his statement, Prof Dussey expressed gratitude towards Gen. Tiani, the CNSP members, and Prime Minister Ali Mahaman Lamine Zeine. He highlighted their commitment to work towards peace, an essential condition for the lasting development and stability of Niger.
