Lomé, February 24, 2025 (©AfreePress) – The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) has announced the imminent launch of an ambitious industrial project in Togo : the construction of a factory to produce reusable sanitary pad kits.
This initiative aims to improve menstrual hygiene and promote public health across the sub-region. The official announcement was made on Thursday, February 20, 2025, by Mr. Barros Bacar Banjai, ECOWAS Resident Representative in Togo, following a meeting with Togo’s Minister of Social Action, Solidarity, and the Promotion of Women, Ms. Kossiwa Zinsou-Klassou.
The factory, set to be established in Sokodé, approximately 300 kilometers north of Lomé, will receive financial and institutional support from the West African Health Organization (WAHO) in partnership with several technical stakeholders.
“This pilot project, though located in Sokodé, will have a national impact. The factory will not only supply the Central Region but will also serve the entire country,” Mr. Banjai explained, highlighting the strategic significance of the initiative.
The project aligns with both economic and social goals. In addition to creating local jobs, it will enhance access to affordable menstrual hygiene products, particularly in rural areas. The factory will also reduce dependency on imports while promoting eco-friendly practices through the production of reusable kits.
By pursuing this initiative, ECOWAS reaffirms its commitment to supporting concrete projects that improve the quality of life for West African populations, while empowering women and girls through better access to essential health resources.
If successful, this pilot project in Togo could be replicated in other ECOWAS member states, further strengthening regional cooperation in public health and sustainable development.
